“Allameh Wahid Behbahani” Int’l Congress Held in Karbala

According to the website of the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Hussein's (AS) holy shrine, intellectuals and religious figures from more than 20 countries participated in the program.

 

The two-day international program began on August 2 in a ceremony with the participation of scholars and clerics from Iran, Iraq and a number of Arab and European countries.

 

Addressing the ceremony, Seyyed Ala Al-Mousawi, head of the Iraqi Shias' Awqaf Office, described the congress as a good opportunity for commemorating the great religious scholars and the important role they played in the society.

 

Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalayi, custodian of the Astan, said that the objective of the international event was to introduce the character of the scholar as a role-model and revive his valuable scientific works.

 

He said that in line with this objective a seminary school named “Al-Allamah Al-Wahid Al-Bihbahani” will be set up in the holy city of Karbala.

 

Abdul Amir Al-Qurayshi, head of “Karbala” Center of Studies and Researches affiliated to the Astan and organizer of the congress, said that the program was  held under the supervision of Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalayi, custodian of the Astan, in cooperation with Dar Al-Turath Institute in the holy city of Najaf.

 

More than 120 papers on the Seerah of Allamah Behbahani were submitted to the congress and 15 books on the life and works of the scholar were unveiled on the first day of the program.

 

The organizers of the congress succeeded to add the papers and books of the congress to the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

 

Muhammad Baqir ibn Muhammad Akmal al-Wahid Bihbahani, also Vahid Behbahani (1706–1791), was a Twelver Shia Islamic scholar. He is widely regarded as the founder or restorer of the Usuli school of Twelver Shia Islam.

He was titled “Wahid-e Asr” (the one of the era) as well as “Ostad-e Akbar” (the greatest master), “Ostad-e Koll” (master of all), “Allamah Thani” and “Muhaqqiq Thalith”.

Allamah Behbahani was a pupil of great masters in Isfahan, and the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

He was born in Isfahan, passed away in Karbala and was buried near the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS).
