11th Persian manuscript list published in Russia

Yousef Amiri added that based on statistics and experts' ideas, the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences maintains over 100,000 Islamic manuscripts of which 90 percent are in Arabic, Persian and Turkic languages, IRNA reported.

Amiri noted that most of the manuscripts are published in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Tatarstan, Dagestan and Chechnya.

Almost 100 volumes of manuscripts, which are in the form of book, article and thesis, were printed in the 19th century.

The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (IOM) of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a research institute in Saint Petersburg, Russia that houses collections of manuscripts and early printed material in Asian languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Tangut.

By the end of the 17th century, the need arose in Russia to know the languages and customs of neighboring countries of the East which meant that it became necessary to train specialists to deal with the cultures of those countries. Thus the collection of books in Eastern languages, as well as cultural objects, began. Books were both bought by diplomats and merchants and presented to the Imperial Court by ambassadors from Eastern countries. By the beginning of the 18th century, a special library of the books in Eastern languages was required which could be used by state experts and scholars.

INLA was responsible for printing the 11th volume of Persian manuscripts list, while the previous volumes were published by The Ayatollah Marashi Najafi Library in Qom, Amiri explained.

Speaking about the latest volume, he said that Hosseini Mottaqi compiled the product in cooperation with Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
