Ancient Ilam mounds awaiting UNESCO recognition

Head of Dehloran Cultural Heritage Department, in Ilam Province, said that preliminary actions have been undertaken to draw up the dossiers for the six ancient mounds in the vicinity of the city.

Faraj Fazeli told Mehr News Agency that Alikesh, Sabz, Mousian, Farrokhabad, Chogha Sefid and Bayat Tappeh are the ancient mounds which are awaiting international recognition as world heritage sites. "Prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, extensive studies were conducted in the region which is historically rich and home to millennia of ancient civilizations. In 1961, Professor Frank Hole and James A. Neely explored Alikesh Mound, the most famous of the six sites," he added.

Ilam Province, naturally and geographically an extension of great Mesopotamian culture and civilization, is home to invaluable monuments, which have been explored or are still buried. The southern part of the province bordering Khuzestan Province and Iraq in the west, would provide excellent sites for archeologists to delve deep into the history of kings and the laity living in the prehistoric era.
