The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Head of AUT Seyed Ahmad Motamedi, the Head of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University located in Najaf as well as the the representative of the Middle Technical University located in Baghdad.
Amhamd Mousavi Shoushtari, an official at AUT’s International Campus, said “until the year 2011, about 47 technical university units were independently active in several Iraqi provinces in the form of faculties or departments which were integrated as four technical universities afterwards.”
“The four Iraqi technical universities located in Mosul, Baghdad, Najaf and Basra received license of operation from Iraq’s Ministry of Science in 2011 and currently contain 72 thousand students,” he added.
Mousavi Shoushtari further underlined that the preliminary stages of joint cooperation between AUT and Iraqi universities began five months ago which finally led to the signing of an MoU.
“The two Iraqi universities comprise of 30 thousand students at all educational levels and are willing to hold joint courses with Iran’s Amirkabir University of Technology,” stressed the official.
Mousavi Shoushtari noted that the first phase of the MoU consists of training Iraqi students for pursuing higher education at BS level and will be implemented in a three-year period.
“The students will spend their first educational year in Iraq and upon passing prerequisite and language preparation courses will spend the remaining two years of education at AUT,” he maintained.
The official highlighted that there exists no limitation with regard to choosing engineering or technical majors for Iraqi students and the planning will be scheduled based on demand.
The signed MoU between AUT and the two Iraqi universities will become fully operational as of October 2016.
