Children's Museum of Manhattan Opens Muslim Culture Exhibit

Just opened on February 13, "America to Zanzibar explores the diversity of Muslim cultures in New York City, the US and abroad."

There's so much to see and do in this exhibition, a part of CMOM's Global Cultural Exhibition Series. The series has already featured three other global cultures, including Ancient Greece, China and Japan. Children and their families will discover the art, architecture, travel, trade, design and more of Muslim culture right in the comfort of the museum's galleries.

CMOM's 3,000-square-foot exhibit space makes it easy for kids to immerse themselves in a new culture. "America to Zanzibar" is made up of five major sections. In the Global Marketplace, buy and sell those sweet and savory spices from Egypt; navigate the Trade Routes of the Indian Ocean in a dhow boat; explore a traditional Muslim Courtyard from the central fountain to the musical instruments; discover the breathtaking Architecture of the Muslim world across continents, and build your own domes and arches; and learn how Muslims live today in American Home.

Why is this exhibition so revolutionary for children today? "Exposure to cultural differences at a young age, especially through the arts and everyday activities, helps children develop a more nuanced respect for diversity as they age,” said Andrew Ackerman, the Children’s Museum’s executive director. "This is vitally important in today’s world, particularly in New York, one of the most diverse cities in the world.”

Not only can children learn hands-on through building blocks, drawing, and other interactive features, but they'll get to experience real Muslim art on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's overpowering Islamic collection. Workshops, programs and performances will accompany the exhibition, which has taken 5 years to develop. The exhibition will travel to other museums around the US upon its completion at CMOM next year.
