Education Ministry commended for helping refugee children

In a meeting with Education Minister Ali-Asghar Fani in Tehran on Saturday, Grandi said, "This is the first time that I am visiting Iran since assuming this responsibility in the United Nations. I seek to promote cooperation with countries that host refugees."

Pointing to World Refugees Day on June 20, he said in spite of various crises facing foreign refugees, Afghan and Iraqi refugees should not be neglected.

Iran has rendered significant services to Afghan and Iraq refugees over the past 37 years ― a big portion pertains to services in education for foreign children, Grandi said.

He expressed appreciations for the steps taken by Iran to help in educating 386,000 foreign students in 25,000 Iranian schools.

Grandi continued that training in technical skills to foreign students and their parents ― as a program seriously followed by Iran’s Education Ministry ― is a major policy of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

On the allocation of $1.5-million UN budget to Iran, he said, "I will hold a session with donor countries when I am in Geneva to attract more funds."
