What is the purpose of the 2016 Secondary Teacher Census?

This Census is designed to show trends and provide insights into New Zealand’s secondary teaching profession. This information will help the education sector, including teacher education providers, to plan the support required for secondary school teachers and meet the needs of students. For example, as a secondary school teacher, it may show you where specialties will be most valued in the future, and help you plan your career and further professional development.

How do I complete the Census?

The first step is to confirm that you are within the target group for this Census by submitting your MOE number. The website will then direct you to the online questionnaire managed by Nielsen. Your survey is anonymous and cannot be linked to an individual or school. You can start right now if you wish. .

Who is conducting the Census?

Nielsen has been commissioned to conduct the online survey on behalf of the Ministry of Education. To learn more about Nielsen click here. .

Who should complete the Census and who shouldn’t?

Please take part if you have taught at secondary level (Year 9 and above) in a New Zealand state or state-integrated school, including residential and special schools, at any time since the beginning of 2013. This includes all permanent, fixed term, part-time and short-term relieving positions.

Current principals and teachers in senior management positions at such schools are also encouraged to complete the Census.

If you have only taught secondary students in private schools, partnership schools or overseas schools since 2013, then unfortunately you will not be able to take part.

Similarly, teachers who have only taught in primary and intermediate schools or ECE, along with support staff and other non-teaching staff who are employed in secondary schools, are not included in this Census.

Censuses covering other areas of the workforce are planned for the future. .

When should I complete the Census by?

The Census is open now and will be available until Friday 22 April (first week of April school holidays). You can start right now if you wish. .

How long will it take to complete?

Do I have to do the Census?

The Census is voluntary. Your participation in this Census will help to build a comprehensive picture of secondary teaching in New Zealand, which will provide valuable information for all teachers. .

Does the NZPPTA support the Census?

Yes. The New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association has been consulted about the Census and supports this process. .

Will my Census answers be combined with any other data later?

Yes. Your Census answers will be combined with a depersonalised version of existing workforce information so the education sector can understand teacher supply by secondary subject. By “depersonalised” we mean that the existing information is anonymised information only. Nobody working with this information can identify you or any other teacher personally. .

How will information from this Census be released?

A summary of findings will be published on TeachersCount.education.govt.nz

The findings will provide a future-focused view of secondary teaching in New Zealand. Census results will be supplemented by up-to-date snapshots on each curriculum learning area.
