Greek MP Says It’s Time to Build Athens' 1st Mosque

Zeybek, who is among three Syriza deputies, stated that the Greek state has to pay attention to the rights of minorities in education and the freedom to practice faith and language. "It is sad to witness that a European capital, which hosted the Olympics in 2004, has no mosque for some 700,000 Muslims in the city. Syriza has a different view, as it respects people's religious lives. I believe the time has come to build a mosque in Athens. In fact, there is a need for more than one mosque. I believe the Syriza government will solve this issue," he said, according to  the Daily Sabah .

Greece is home to about 1 million immigrants, and groups such as the Golden Dawn say undocumented workers have pushed up crime and put a burden on state resources at a time of crisis. Muslim groups estimate there are more than 200,000 Muslims from countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh living in Athens alone.
Without a proper place of worship, they have been praying in makeshift mosques set up in old garages or dingy warehouses. Many have been the targets of racist attacks, and at least one has been set on fire.
