Head of Preschool Department at OERP: fundamental transformation should begin in preschool period

Head of Preschool Department at Organization for Educational Research and Planning (OERP) stressed that fundamental change ought to begin in the preschool period.

In an interview with Public Relations and International Affairs Office at OERP, Masoud Tehrani, highlighting the significance of this period, said, “In religious, scientific and psychological sources, this age group and education from birth and even during pregnancy has been highly attended.”

He noted, “Various sources have claimed that human being’s personality is established during childhood since what is learned in this period will be lasting like stone carving and what is learned in adulthood is likened to carving on sand.”

He maintained, “According to the neuroscience findings, the most mental development is observed in the first six years of life. As a consequence, we have attempted to provide programs and contents suitable for this age group.”

“The preschool period is highly important and child’s bringing-up begins during pregnancy; however, due to limitations, our formal planning focuses more on kindergartens and preschool period. The period prior to going to school is divided into three age groups: the first stage is up to two years old, the second stage is from two to four years old, namely the kindergarten period, and the third stage is from four to six years old, that is the preschool period.”

“With regard to our Supreme Leader’s communicative polices as well as the enacted laws, we provided some definition for the preschool period.”

Regarding the roles of teachers and families, he noted, “We believe that in the entire periods, they play important roles; yet, their effects are much greater in the preschool period. If the family does not play an active role or the teacher is deprived of required qualifications, education will be overshadowed by these facts.”

“We are trying to set up a code of conduct based on which we would know what we should expect from families and teachers and what conditions we must provide to make families accompany our programs.”

Announcing that the preschool curriculum guideline for children will be ready by February, he added, “As mentioned, creating a system for teachers and families is the next step so that our expectations from them can be met.”

He maintained, “Another measure to be carried out by February is to compile certain indicators to produce proper preschool education resources in written and non-written forms. They will include workbooks, films and podcasts and will be provided to children as cultural products.”

Head of Preschool Department at OERP said, “With the preparation of the preschool curriculum guideline, we will see changes in the content provided to kindergartens and preschools from next year.”

“Our next plan is to produce special education packages for kindergartens; we will later specify what features each package should have.”

“Content production will not be concentrated for preschools as multi-authorship is stressed. We hope that good things will happen with the approval and finalization of the so-called guideline," he concluded.
