Iran’s President Asks for Students’ Views on How to Rid World of Violence

Addressing a huge gathering of students in a ceremony in Tehran on Saturday to mark the beginning of Iran’s new school year, President Rouhani described violence as the major problem in the region and the world.

“As you, (Iranian) students, are beginning your academic year in a safe and secure environment, schools in our neighboring countries such as Iraq, Syria and Yemen have been destroyed and students have been killed,” he said.

However, he added, violence doesn’t just mean war or terrorism, but rather means disrespecting each other, lack of morality and depriving children and the youth of education.

The president went on to ask school students across the country to write their answers to a number of questions about curbing violence.

The questions include: Where does violence come from? How do some learn violence? How should one stand against violence? And how can the region and the world be saved from violence.

During the ceremony, Rouhani rang opening bell of the new school year in the country.

With the new academic year starting in Iran, 107,000 schools have reopened their doors to some 13.5 million students.
