Iranian Vice-President and Head of Department of Environment Masoumeh Ebtekar said on Friday that relevant officials were following up on the case of Mount Damavand, the second highest volcano in Asia and the highest summit in the Middle East, and its preliminary steps for the visit of UNESCO experts and representative.
"Our first measure [for preparing Mount Damavand for inscription] dates back to 2004-05 when it was introduced as Iran’s first national and natural site,” said Ebtekar, stressing that more measures must be taken in improving the level of protection of this valuable site.
She further stated that permanent cessation of mining activities at the height of this peak as well as protecting the surrounding areas from getting littered are among the most important factors in preparing Mount Damavand for UNESCO World Heritage List inscription.
Mount Damavand, a potentially active volcano, is the highest peak in Iran and the Middle East, and the second highest volcano in Asia. It also has a special place in Persian mythology and folklore. This peak is located in the middle of the Alborz range, near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, in Damavand County, 66 kilometers (41 miles) northeast of the capital city of Tehran.
