Iran commemorates World Audiovisual Heritage Day

Addressing the event, Acting Secretary General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO Sadollah Nasiri Qeydari said that UNESCO is a reputed body focusing on increasing public awareness which might help protect vulnerable heritage, particularly audiovisual heritage, ISNA reported.

He added that Iran has 1,000 films about its armed forces which need to be protected to convey the experience to subsequent generations.

He also read out the message from UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova to mark the occasion.

In her message, Bokova said that archives are as if humanity's common memory bank which is available in several private and governmental organizations, protection of audiovisual heritage is a must in remote areas.

Against the backdrop of a large share of the world's audiovisual heritage already lost forever, UNESCO today warned that only 10 to 15 years are left to transfer remaining audiovisual recordings to digital media before they too vanish.
