Iran demands UNESCO register Shahr-e Kord as world feltmaking hub

According to the Cultural Heritage Department in Shahr-e Kord, the world body has been provided with documents needed to register Shahr-e Kord, the capital city of Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Province, as the main center of the ancient art.

Bahman Asgari-Savadjani, a department official, who spoke at the First Scientific Seminar on Feltmaking in Shahr-e Kord, said that the great diversity of products and large number of people involved in this art had contributed the city's position as the world center of the art. He added, "Exports of the art product from the province exceed $250,000 and we forecast even more potentials for the city in developing the art."

He noted, "The Cultural Heritage Department has actively supported those engaged in the by buying their products. The seminar seeks to address opportunities and threats facing the art whose annual products exceeds 30 metric tons and we still have ample capacities to be used."

At the same ceremony, Mehrdad Raeisi, deputy head of the department, said that the province had the privilege of hosting the event. However he believed the shortages also lingered on the industry.

He listed the uncompetitive packaging, the lack of dyeing facilities and weak infrastructures in the market as the major hurdles facing this art. He called on the academia to contribute to provide training on this ancient art as a major indigenous branch of art.
