Iran owns 150 titles on UNESCO’s Tentative List

Farhad Nazari the General Manager of Registration Office of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) has said the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List for Iran has not been updated for a long time and some of the 150 titles need to be re-examined in the registration committee; “currently, 40 items of Iranian historical and natural heritage are on the waiting list,” he noted.

“Since there exists only one Tentative List at UNESCO for both historical and natural heritage, each year only two records can be registered on the list because both categories have been established on the basis of one convention and will be examined in one meeting; however, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) experts at UNESCO discuss historical heritage while the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) experts examine natural heritage and the results of both committees will be delivered to the jury for final approval,” he noted.

Nazari further continued, “In the field of Intangible Heritage, certain items are registered in a multinational manner jointly by several countries and in the Tangible List also, some records cover a chain of historical monuments like the record of Iranian gardens in which nine gardens were simultaneously registered.”

“Iran’s historical and natural list of UNESCO is completing and the final list will be delivered to UNESCO in near future,” Nazari concluded.
