Farhad Nazari, the head of Registration of Historical Sites, said that the compilation on the Iranian bowed string instrument ‘Kamancheh’ has been sent to and received by the UNESCO. The file with the number 1071 has been included in the UNESCO temporary list to be inscribed on the World Intangible Heritage List for 2016.
"Kamancheh will not be inscribed as a multi-national case with other countries; this is one of Iran’s national cases, and played in various parts of the country. Kamancheh is among the most pervasive instruments and because of its importance, has been prioritized over other cases to be inscribed on the UNESCO list,” he said.
Pirniakan, a university professor and music researcher, noted that for compiling the file on registering Kamancheh on the UNESCO list, a one-hour documentary has been produced on the making procedures, its playing, and its pervasiveness among various Iranian ethnicities. The film shows how each ethnic group dressed in their local clothes have been instructed to play Kamancheh and even hold classes on introducing the instrument to those interested in learning it. "10 minutes of this documentary will be selected to be included in the instrument’s final file," he said.
Kamancheh is an Iranian bowed string instrument. The word ‘kamancheh’ means ‘little bow’ in Persian. It is widely used in the classical music of Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kurdistan Regions.
Famous Iranian kamancheh players include Ali-Asghar Bahari, Ardeshir Kamkar, Kayhan Kalhor, Saeed Farajpouri and Mehdi Bagheri.
