Iranian student reportedly among UNESCO prize nominees

Ehsan Mohammadi Malahati, the Iranian candidate for the UNESCO award, told Russian news website Sputnik, “UNESCO International Committee first conducted a research of potential candidates in all Member States of the Organization and then sent a request to the national commission. They called the names of their selected candidates and I received post notice from UNESCO saying that I was selected in the list of candidates.”

“My main project, which attracted the attention of UNESCO is the academic and cultural, artistic and educational project called WAVE (World Against Violence and Extremism- world against violence and extremism),” Malahati was quoted by the website as saying.

The candidate said that the instigator of this project was Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. The corresponding idea was voiced at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly in 2013, which was approved by a majority vote for the resolution on “Peace against violence and violent extremism.”

UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence rewards significant activities in the scientific, artistic, and cultural fields aimed at the promotion of a spirit of tolerance and non-violence.
