Khayyam monument unveiled in Astrakhan

The four-meter-tall bronze statue is located in the Alley of Monuments in front of Astrakhan State University, Press TV wrote.

The 1.5-ton statue was made in Yekaterinburg and delivered to Astrakhan's student garden to be placed next to the statue of Khayyam's Turkmen counterpart, Makhtoom-gholi Faraghi.

The sculptor has depicted his work based on Omar Khayyam's marble bust mounted above his grave in Iran. Monuments of Omar Khayyam can be seen in Tehran, Dushanbe, Bucharest, and Ashkhabad.

Khayyam was born in the 11th century CE in northeastern Iran. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential scientists of the Middle Ages. He was also a philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician.

Khayyam owes his lasting fame mainly to his Rubaiyat — four-line verses of wisdom. He is also known as the author of the most accurate of all calendars in Iran.
