It was the first night of mourning at the Husseiniyeh for martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

A large number of people and the Islamic Establishment’s officials were present at the event.

Hojat-ol-Islam Sayyed Ahmad Khatami, a senior cleric, in a speech elaborated on different aspects of Imam Hussein (AS) uprising and the lessons of the Ashura school.

He said Imam Hussein (AS) taught us that in supporting the divine religion, there is no limit to making self-sacrifices.

Later in the ceremony, Masha’allah Abedi and Mansour Arzi recited elegies for the martyrs of Karbala.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

Imam Hussein (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
