Lut Desert Up for Global Registration

Announcing this, Javad Sirousi, an expert from South Khorasan Cultural Heritage, Handicraft and Tourism Department told Iran Daily that the dossier required for global registration of Baladeh Aqueduct, in Ferdows, has been drawn up and submitted to UNESCO, Tehran-based English newspaper, Iran Daily, reported.

The official recalled that the project to establish Akbarieh Garden, registered on the World Heritage List in 2011, began during the Zand era and continued until the Pahlavi era.

Sirousi said the edifice, built in the garden, has many defensive features, adding the architectural style of the premises is of high importance.

'The outer and inner doors of the structure, built too short, are obscure by the arches of the building, ' he said.

All trees of the garden, mostly pines, date back to 150 years ago and have identification tags, he added.

He said architectural style of most Iranian gardens, including Akbarieh Garden, are very charming. Therefore, the ICHHTO experts plan to hold special tours to make Iranian and foreign tourist’s familiar with such gardens.

Referring to the proposal submitted by Iran to UNESCO on the registration of Lut Desert, he said about 80 percent of the desert is in Kerman Province and the remainder 20 percent is in South Khorasan and Sistan-Baluchestan provinces.

Sirousi said according to US' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Heydarabad Desert in Nehbandan, with temperatures of up to 75°C, is the hottest region in the world.

'The tallest sand dunes on the Earth, namely 'Rig-e Yalan', in the southern part of Nehbandan, draw a large number of tourists to the province each year,' he said.

He underlined that the removal of Western sanctions on Iran, has led to a significant rise in the number of foreign tourists traveling to Iran.

He noted that world registration of the provinces historical and cultural sites would help raise the number of foreign travelers visiting the province, adding fortunately necessary infrastructures have been put in place to achieve this.

Sirousi believes the majority of foreign tourists prefer to stay in local houses rather than five-star hotels to get acquainted with local customs and traditions.

'A number of historical houses of South Khorasan Province have been renovated for use as tourists' accommodation centers,' he added.

The expert said road access to tourist sites of the province would also be completed.

He pointed out since Tabas and Nehbandan cities and the road linking Birjand to the holy city of Mashhad in Khorasan Razavi Province play very important role in attracting tourists to the province, the government allocated $46.66 million for the construction of Mashhad-Birjand and Birjand-Nehbandan roads as well as the access routes to Tabas.

He hoped that the number of foreign tourists visiting South Khorasan Province would increase significantly in cooperation with ICHHTO.
