Mashhad to be registered as city of precious stones

Attending the first meeting of pilgrimage souvenir’s permanent secretariat on Saturday, Bahman Namvar Motlagh said: “The holy city of Mashhad boasts a great significance in the fields of handicrafts and traditional arts particularly handicrafts related to pilgrimage souvenirs.”

“Currently Isfahan and Tabriz have been registered as the cities of handicrafts and carpets in the world respectively and now we tend to register Mashhad as the city of precious and semi-precious stones”, he said.

If the matter is fulfilled, the stones will turn into an international brand, he noted.

“The holy city of Mashhad holds a great capacity and potentials through which it can attend international markets”, the Iranian official said.

Namvar Motlagh added “Mashhad can and should be the greatest Shia pilgrimage market in the world. Muslim and Shia artists should not be unemployed in Iran’s spiritual capital while the handicrafts are being presented in Iran by non-Muslim artists.”

As Mashhad has been selected as the cultural capital of the Islamic world in 2017, the head of Khorasan Razavi’s ICHTO Hussein Zare Seffat also said “the selection is significant and indeed an opportunity which should be seized for shining in international markets.”
