Moscow hosts ‘Russia and Muslim World’ int’l conference

Secretary General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought Ayatollah Mohsen Araki is attending the international event.

Addressing the conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underlined the importance of developing his country’s relations with the Muslim world, especially given the growing threat posed by extremist groups.

He said Russia, which is home to more than 25 million Muslims, like Muslim countries attaches importance to fighting terrorism.

Lavrov conveyed the greetings of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the participants and said Moscow is ready to implement the decisions made in the conference.

Russian Grand Mufti Ravil Gainutdin was another speaker at the opening ceremony. He described the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, ISIS or IS) terrorist group as an enemy of humanity and a great challenge to the Muslim Ummah.

He underlined the need for global confrontation with the un-Islamic group, IQNA reported.

Gainutdin noted the Russian Council of Muftis issued a Fatwa (religious edict) that calls for fighting ISIL and other extremist terrorist groups.

He further referred to Palestine as a major issue of the Muslim world and underlined support for the cause of Palestine.

The Russian Grand Mufti also touched upon the situation in Yemen and called for an end to conflicts and foreign aggression on the Arabian Peninsula country.

Representatives of 27 countries, including Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Algeria, Afghanistan, Egypt, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iraq, Albania, Qatar and Turkey, are present in the conference.
