Official: Iran to Increase Production of Pharmaceutical Raw Materials to 80%

Spokesman for Iran's Food and Drug Administration Kianoush Jahanpour announced the country's plans to boost production of raw materials for production of drugs in the next two years.

"Today, 67% of raw materials for medicine is produced inside Iran and we hope that this number will increase to 80% by the end of the current administration [of President Rouhani]," Jahanpour told reporters in Tehran on Tuesday.

Meantime, Head of the Syndicate of Producers of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Materials and Drug Packaging Industries Faramarz Ekhterayee said that 100% of the country's needs to drug packaging materials are produced indigenously.

"We also produce 97% of the needed medicine," he added.

In relevant remarks last February, An official said in February that the medical equipment and devices produced by Iranian researchers are exported to tens of world states, as the country unveiled a new home-made drug for patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

"At present, Iran's medical equipment is exported to 40 world states. Some target countries have demanded Iran's products with 'Made in Iran' brand and some of them have asked for launching production lines of the products in their countries. Also, some goods are produced for a number of countries based on their orders and the product is presented under a different brand," Secretary of the Union of Iran's Exporters of Medical Equipment Reza Kompani said.

He added that the West European states, Germany and Italy were among the countries which import Iran's medical equipment.
