Romanian Ambassador Elaborates on Iranology in Romania

Teodorescu said that Iran and Romania were on the Silk Road in the ancient times and therefore have had trade relations for a long time.
"1969 was a turning point in the relationship between the two nations since the field Iranology was founded at the University of Bucharest but then, there weren’t enough instructors in this field. As a result, it was in 1974 that with some Romanian professors, an Iranology department was formally initiated at the university,” the Romania’s ambassador said.
Admitting that the Romanian society has always been interested in knowing Iran, Teodorescu added that since 1900, Romanian translators have translated some valuable literary Persian texts.
"In 1905, Golistan by the great Persian poet Sa’di, was translated to Romanian language and the Romanian people are particularly interested in Iranian experts’ advices in the subject of governance,” said the ambassador adding that "the Romanians love the Persian poet Omar Khayyam. When the Romanian translators managed to translate his work ‘Rubaiyat’ directly from Persian to Romanian language, they subsequently moved to the works of other eminent poets such as Sa’di, Ferdowsi, Hafez, Baba Tahir, Mahmud Shabestari and so forth.”
According to Teodorescu, the relation between Iran and Romania began in July 2, 1902 and has since hopefully been advancing.
At the meeting, the Faculty Member of National Library and Archives of Iran Mohsen Ja’fari Mazhab (PhD) elaborated on the life and work of Dimitrie Cantemir (1673–1723), a Romanian prolific historian, philosopher, historian and composer. Ja’fari Mazhab noted that Cantemir studied historical texts in the Ottoman Empire’s libraries and wrote on the rise and fall of this empire and its Sultans.
"This great historian was in the court of Peter the Great (Tsar of Russia from 1682 to 1725) and he witnessed the Safavids decline and reported it to Europe,” noted Jafari Mazhab.
At the end, the Faculty Member of National Library and Archives of Iran asked for more research on Cantemir as a great historian as well as composer.
