Senior Revolutionary cleric passes away at 90

Ayatollah Abolqasem Khazali had been suffering from disease since long. He was among the pioneer clerics of the Islamic Revolution and participated in drafting of the Constitution. He was former member of Guardian Council, and former head of Ghadir International Foundation. Ayatollah Khazali represented Mashhad constituency in the Assembly of Experts.

He was born in Boroujerd in 1925 and entered Mashhad Seminary School for preliminary courses before going to Qom Seminary School. In Qom, Ayatollah Khazali enjoyed the discipleship of grand ayatollahs such as Ayatollah Tabatabaei Boroujerdi, Imam Khomeini (RA), and Allameh Mohammad Hossein Tabatabaei in his path to the highest possible degree, ijtihad.

He was among the first drafters of Islamic Republic of Iran’s Constitution, and led Ghadir International Foundation. Ayatollah Khazali also pioneered signing of the general statement by religious leaders to approving Imam Khomeini’s (RA) ijtihad after the death of Ayatollah Boroujerdi. He had been imprisoned for a while by the Pahlavi regime for his engagement in the Revolutionary campaign.
