The theme chosen for 2018 is "Hyper connected museums: New approaches, new publics".
The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that, "Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples."
Participation in International Museum Day is growing among museums all over the world. In 2017, more than 36,000 museums participated in the event in some 157 countries.
Entry will be free to heritage museums across Iran on May 18.
As part of Iran's programs on the day, 46 automobiles and four motorcycles which date back to 40 years ago will be showcased in streets in a symbolic manner.
"The scheme involves museums and historical sites which are affiliated with Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization," the ICHHTO announced in a press release.
From May 18 to 20, more than 100 museums in China will be free to the public, while admission fees of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Shanghai Film Museum, Shanghai Guanfu Museum and Shanghai Natural History Museum will be 50 percent cheaper.
It's just one of a series of initiatives to celebrate the International Museum Day on May 18.
On that day, about 50 museums, including Shanghai Museum and Liu Haisu Art Museum, will stay open until 9:00 p.m. for a special 'museum night'.
China Art Museum received 1.23 million visitors for its 180 exhibitions and 760 public art activities from 2012 to 2017. Among the highlights were works on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck from the Liechtenstein royal family and an exhibition of the works of Colombian figurative artist and sculptor Fernando Botero. Its public art activities included lectures, films and live performances.
Meanwhile, Msheireb Museums (MM), the new cultural destination at Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) celebrated International Museum Day.
