Shahrekord crafts enjoying 7 UNESCO seals of excellence

Mehrdad Raeisi, deputy head of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari’s Cultural Heritage and Handicrafts, said the province has received seven UNESCO seals of excellence for various handicraft products including hand-woven kilims (flat tapestry-woven carpets), felt, locks, metallic and other products.

“Receiving UNESCO seal of excellence for handicrafts plays an important role in facilitating our access to the international markets to sell such products. This in turn, leads to the increase of handicraft production in the province and creating various job opportunities,” said Raeisi.

He added that Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province is one of the leading provinces in handicraft production and has exported a great number of its products to various parts of the country as well as a number of foreign countries.

The program of UNESCO Seal of Excellence for the craft products was originally piloted in 2000-2003 for Southeast Asia by UNESCO and the ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development Association (AHPADA).

This program has succeeded not only in raising the standards of quality of handicraft products but has also enhanced international market awareness of products coming from all the countries in the region. Iran has been participating in this program since 2007.
