Social Psychology: Self Discovery

The scientific study of how people influence, co-exist, think about and relate with one another is known as Social Psychology. Self knowledge is the ability of a person has in knowing his or her mental state, his or her likes and dislikes, his or her desires and beliefs. It is also said to have something to do with the knowledge of one’s character, identity and thoughts. On the other hand, self regulation also known as self control is the ability of an individual to control or regulate his or her behavioral ways, desires and emotions so as to achieve a reward.

Sources

There are various sources of self knowledge; some of the sources of my self- knowledge include; one of them is self enhancement. This is when one feels the need to be positive in order to gain high self esteem. From this, people have a tendency to feel some self worth. If an individual has no self worth then they feel miserable.

Another source of my self-knowledge is accuracy. This is the need for one really feels need to find out the truth or reality about them whether good or bad. Like any other person I find important to know whether I am a good or bad person. This helps me feel good about myself if I am told I am good hence giving me a great sense of self worth.  By knowing about myself, I am able to set goals and achieve them. When I know I am successful I get the urge to do even better in order to be more successful. This is all due to the fact that I know what I am good and bad at making me know which path to take in order to succeed.

Finally another source of my self-knowledge is being consistent. This is when I only take in the information that is true about me. This helps me protect what I believe about myself. By this I am able to shun whatever negative things people say about me that are  contrary to my beliefs making me feel positive about myself and makes me be consistent in my decision making and the way I do my things.

In my life, there are certain motives and factors that lead to my self-regulation or self control. One them is self-assessment. Now this is the ability an individual has to evaluate his or her intentions or acts.  This helps me be aware of who I really am enabling me to regulate my behavior in case I act otherwise. Another motive is self-verification as it knows my identity; that I really am. By having this motivation, I am able to maintain my identity no matter where I am without losing who I really am no matter the circumstances. I am able to regulate myself no matter the circumstance.

Lastly, self-improvement is another form of motivation that leads me to regulate myself. Every human being has a need to succeed and improve their status in life. This helps me improve the negative things I know about myself and make them better and use the positive to succeed.

“Social Comparison Theory” Roy, states that, there is a natural drive in all individuals to know how people or the outside of themselves in order to evaluate their self opinions and abilities to do something. As a student, I do look into what teachers and other students think or say about me in order to regulate my actions. This helps me improve in my grades; change my attitude towards certain subjects in order to succeed. If my fellow students tell me about myself, I am able to do well to them without losing my self- identity. In summary, it is important to know who we really are from other people so that we can improve and succeed in life.

What makes a good teacher?

Teachers are people who help to pass knowledge to other people. They are important people in the society because they help to pass wisdom to the people in the society. This helps to fight illiteracy in the society. Apart from teaching, teachers help in ensuring that the learners in the society are disciplined. This is because teachers act as strict disciplinarians in the schools where they teach. They also help to evaluate the capability of students to advice their parents on the requirements of each child. Teachers also act as parents because they take care of the learners while at school. There are various characteristics of good teachers. These characteristics show what makes a person to be termed as a good teacher.

One of the characteristics of a good teacher is that he/she should be a good communicator. A teacher must be able to communicate to students well because they are required to pass knowledge to students through communication. Another characteristic of a good teacher is that he/she calm. Though students will make mistakes time and again, a good teacher should avoid shouting to them. He/she should calmly correct the students when they make mistakes because this will enhance learning. Teachers should also use technology to teach their students. A good teacher is also capable of using sense of humor while teaching because this will help to maintain the attention of the learners and will lead to efficient learning. A good teacher ensures good management skills that help him/her to manage time and resources well while at school. This is important because it ensures efficient learning.

A good teacher maintains a fair attitude towards all learners no matter their learning speed. This ensures equal learning opportunity for both fast and slow learners. Moreover, good teachers have a good command of the subjects they are supposed to teach. When a teacher has a good command for the subject they are teaching, they pass good knowledge of the subject to the learners. Dedication to personal work is also another characteristic of a good teacher. A good teacher shows dedication to their work and this allows him/her to work efficiently. Good teachers are detailed and this ensures that they fully explain concepts to their students. Good leadership is another characteristic of good teachers. Good teachers are good leaders and good friends to all their students. This helps to instill the right discipline to the students.

I also feel that a good teacher should always set good examples to the learners. Students are likely to copy the behavior of their teacher and thus a good teacher has to set a good example to be emulated by the students. In addition, a good teacher must be able to transform the world through knowledge. Lastly, a good teacher should not only teach but should educate the learners on various issues of the world.

Ideas important for good teaching

There are various ideas that are good teaching. Good teaching ensures that learners get the concepts that their teachers want them to get. One of the good teaching ideas is setting the learning context. Setting a good learning context ensures a good learning environment for the learners. A good learning context should be learner centered. A learner centered context ensures that learners are actively involved in the learning process. A teacher should consult learners on what they want to learn. In addition, the teacher should involve students in setting, monitoring and modifying the goals and objectives of the programs being designed for them. Moreover, a learner centered approach allows students to monitor and assess their own progress. This means that the students are involved in the evaluation of teaching during the course and after it has been completed.

The other idea that is important for good teaching is communicative language teaching. Teachers should use language to express meaning. This requires them to use language that is meaningful to the students in order to promote learning. The communicative language used should also reflect the needs of the learners. Teachers need to make use of a good teaching method that reflects the needs of their students. The teacher should also ensure that he/she involves the students in the communication. This will enable the students to take part in the learning process through communicating their needs to the teacher. Students should also be involved in processes such as information sharing, negotiation of meaning and interaction. The teacher should facilitate the communication process between him/her and the students.

The other idea that is important for good teaching is setting goals and objectives. Setting goals and objectives helps teachers to know how to go about the course curriculum. In order to set the goals and objectives of the teaching, a teacher should first identify the needs of individual learners. The teacher should know what each of the learner needs in order to set the goals and objectives of the teaching.
