Step by Step from Compilation to Printing House: A Story of the Struggle to Publish 124 Million Copies of Textbooks

The textbooks printing house received reporters for the first time to demonstrate different phases of production of textbooks from the first steps to making them ready for use by students so that the population of 13 million school students becomes aware of the hard process of producing any single copy of textbooks. Some phases of preparation are accomplished at the OERP and others are outsourced.

Any title of newly compiled books has an art director. The content prepared by compilers is sent to typesetters after final confirmation. Then layout designing starts. Sometimes the team has to work until late at night to make the book ready in time.

Pre-printing Phase

Printing process involves some steps. Pre-printing step begins at typesetting. The fonts used vary from 4.5 to 12. Then pagination starts.

Pictures, diagrams and drawings are scanned. Then colors are separated into basic colors of yellow, blue, red and black.

Printing Phase

The main textbook printing house is sited outside OERP. Offset Company is in charge of printing textbooks. Besides textbooks, this company prints about 38 million copies of Roshd educational magazines every year.

A big number of compilers and experts of the OERP together with the personnel of Offset Company have been working month after month in an effort to provide students with their textbooks right in time before the new academic year. This effort reaches its peak during the summer where they sometimes have to keep working round the clock.
