Tehran to host microbiology congress

Talking to Iran Daily, Mohammad Mehdi Feizabadi, the head of Iranian Microbiology Association, said about 60 experts from European Association of Urology (EAU), The International Society of Chemotherapy (ISC), Belgian Society for Microbiology, Asia and Asia-Pacific Congress of Microbiology and Pasteur Institute of France will attend the event.

“Nineteen foreign experts will present papers at the event,” he said, adding the congress will include 11 panels and workshops as well as three symposiums aimed at exchanging knowledge and enhancing scientific ties with the participating countries.

Clinical microbiology, food microbiology, industrial and agricultural microbiology, molecule microbiology and biotechnology are only some of the sections of the international event, he said.

Noting that Tehran’s water is safe and microbe-free because 42 laboratories monitor water quality every day, Feizabadi said both tap water and bottled water will be tested by the attending experts to make sure the amounts of nitrate and other minerals in the drinking water do not exceed the standard level.

“Water microbiology symposium will be held at the event in collaboration with Tehran Water and Waste Water Company,” he said.

“TB symposium will also be held at the event to study the prevalence rate of the disease in the country as well as introducing new methods of treatments and medicines,” he said.

Feizabadi said microbial resistance is one of the main global concerns, attributing it to excessive and unnecessary use of antibiotics.

He said unchecked use of antibiotics have reduced their effectiveness and many diseases and microbes cannot be eliminated by antibiotics currently available.

Since manufacturing new antibiotics takes lots of time and money, Feizabadi said, antibiotic resistance can lead to the creation of superbugs in hospitals, threatening the health of patients.
