Forty-two paintings, including works by Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Jackson Pollock, are part of the collection exhibiting at Tehran's Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art amassed the greatest collection of modern Western masterpieces outside Europe and North America just before the Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. The museum is following up its big abstract expressionism show with a mixed exhibition of Iranian and Western art, opening on November 20.
According to Tehran.ir, the event also displays a collection of works by late Iranian modernist painter Farideh Lashai (1944-2013).
Lashai studied art at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Vienna and held over 100 solo and group exhibitions in Iran and many other countries, such as Italy, Germany, US, Switzerland, Britain, and France.
'This is the first step and we hope to have more mutual cooperation to showcase outstanding Iranian artists as well as displaying more works from our foreign art collection,' Iran's Culture Minister Ali Jannati told AFP following a Friday night visit to the gallery.
In October, the museum signed a tentative agreement with the German government to send 60 artworks from Tehran—30 Western and 30 Iranian—to Berlin for a three-month show next fall, which would mark the museum’s first exhibition overseas.
The artworks have already been put on display five years ago.
