Tehran's Baharestan Sq. registered on national heritage list

Farhad Nazari added that the registration of historical works not only serves to safeguard them but also to create public awareness about their significance, IRNA wrote.

"Historical works give us further information about Iranian culture and civilization," he noted.

Baharestan palace and square are among the oldest structures in Tehran. The founder of the palace was Mirza Hossein Khan Sepahsalar. However, the statue in the middle of the square is that of Ayatollah Modarres.

To the north of the square was Negarestan Garden of Fat'hali Shah. A number of buildings were constructed later in the area and most of these buildings currently belong to the University of Tehran.

The National Museum of Arts is also located to the south of this neighborhood.

Over 31,000 immovable historical and cultural works have been registered since 1930.
