Textbooks must teach skills and create competency in students

Dr. Fakhreddin Danesh Ashtiani said in a meeting with authors of textbooks: “Reform Document” and also fast growing information technology have created a new outlook of education, reports Public Relations of the Ministry of Education.

He added: Identity and Security are two main issues in countries plans, so we should invest in education and have short term and long term programs in order to achieve these two objectives.

Referring to the Leader’s recent speech about “University Tendency” problem, Minister of Education remarked: Our perspective should not portrait entering university as the goal of education, for we expect more than 70% of graduates of intermediate education to enter labor market right after graduation.

Criticizing senseless growth of universities and other academic centers, Dr.Ashtiani said: We should study textbooks to see how much competency they create in students and what skills they teach? Unreasonable growth of certificates elevates expectancy as well and consumes a large portion of budget.

Memory centered educational system causes its own damages, so we must train thinker students who can use what they have learned. Mentioning that there are 130 to 150 working days in educational calendar, Minister of Education continued: Our classes’ duration is about 90 minutes, while studies show that a 50 minutes session is much more effective and increases efficiency.

Insisting that it is quality of textbooks that matters not the size, member of cabinet added: Thinking and research must be taken very seriously in schools for in years to come, cyber schools will develop and replace physical schools.
