UN committee approves Iran's initiation on dust pollution

Majid Shafiepour, an advisor to the head of Iran's Environmental Protection Organization, said on Wednesday that dust pollution has caused economic and social problems for large areas in Asia and Africa and it needs urgent action of the international bodies.

He urged all regional organizations to cooperate in the field of environmental protection and campaign against the dust pollution.

The resolution on dust pollution will be approved officially in the 71th session of the General Assembly in 2016, Shafiepour added.

Western Iran is often struck by dust storms in the summer, which originate from the deserts of Iraq.

During sandstorms, the dust in the atmosphere and consequent haze increases by 17 times more than the standard level, interrupting activity in the stricken area.

Meantime, Iranian research studies have found silicon dioxide, calcium, potassium, carbon, and other elements in the haze, which could damage the respiratory system of those exposed.

The dangers such pollution has posed to human respiratory and cardiac systems have prompted Iranian officials to close schools, universities and offices in order to encourage people to remain at home.
