Education Minister of Iran: It is a pity that millions of children all over the world are still deprived from their natural rights.

Mr. Bathayi, Minister of Education delivered a speech at the 5th International Ministerial Conference in Morocco and as Iran’s representative thanked Dr. Othman al-Tawijri, the Secretary-General of the ISESCO and other officials, and expressed his gratitude for the hospitality of the Kingdom of Morocco, and said that the efforts of the international community have been based on the promotion and guarantee of the rights of children around the world. With all the efforts done, it is unfortunate that millions of children all over the world, still do not have their own natural rights, including the right to education and social benefits, and are subject to a variety of physical and mental violence and injuries.

Referring to children living in insecure environments that are involved in war and violence, he said, “An example of these children are the Palestinians who are exposed to various forms of violence every day and who do not have their natural rights. The Islamic Republic of Iran has succeeded in providing formal quality education for girls and boys in urban and rural areas. As the school enrollment rate for children in Iran now exceeds 98%. The rate of enrollment of the girls and boys has almost become equaled. Over the past 5 years, the coverage rate in the pre-school period has risen from 45% to 70%. Also, this course of education has been considered as part of the official education of the country due to its importance in children's mental development and the approved curriculum.”

The academic achievements of Iranian students were also one of the topics of the speech, which he said: “Iranian students at the Olympiads of science and sports have also achieved a breakthrough, as in the past year, Iranian students succeeded in receiving 11 Gold medals, 14 silver medals and 10 bronze medals at Olympiads in mathematics, chemistry, physics, astronomy, computer science, and biology. Another important action taken over the past five years is the creation of a social emergency service designed to protect children. The establishment of more than 2000 NGOs throughout the country to train, promote and protect children's rights under the CRC is one of our other steps towards the implementation of this treaty.”

He also stated that the reform of the Islamic Penal Code had been made with the aim of protecting children's rights, and also the establishment of a law on family protection, the drafting of the law on the protection of childless or abusive children in 2013, and the establishment of a criminal procedure law.

The Minister of Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: “Although we have had lots of steps and efforts towards educational developments, but still I acknowledge that many steps still have to be taken to achieve the objectives of the treaty.”
