A senior Iranian health ministry official announced on Sunday that 20 hi-tech medicine are produced in Iran, stressing the country's first rank in the region in production of science.

"Iran has ranked first in the region in production of science in the past two years," Deputy Director of the Health Ministry for Research and Technology Shahin Akhoundzadeh said.

He added that Iran produces nearly 96% of the needed drugs and 70% of the raw material for production of medicine inside the country.

"Also, we produce 20 hi-tech biotechnological drugs with applications in treatment of cancer and rheumatology diseases and rate high in the region in this field," Akhoundzadeh said.

Iran has taken long strides in producing different types of drugs and medical equipment.

Iran in June unveiled 9 new indigenized medicine to treat depression, skin, blood and infertility problems as well as cancer.

The drugs were unveiled in a ceremony participated by Iranian Health Minister Saeed Namaki in Alborz province near Tehran.

They include hi-tech drugs to treat depression, male infertility, blood platelet adhesion, skin infections, skin diseases, advanced breast cancer, lung cancer and motor neuron diseases, and a medicine to stretch bone marrow tissue.

All the drugs have been produced based on the highest international standards using state-of-the-art technologies.
