A number of ranking Iranian officials attended the closing ceremony, including Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and Vice-president Mohammad Baqer Nobakht.
Nobakht in his speech said one of the challenges the Muslim world is facing today is the fake groups formed in the name of Islam to undermine the religion.
These groups make attempts to distort the true image of Islam and portray it as violent and merciless, he noted.
In line with confronting this phenomenon, the Iranian president made the World against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) proposal to the UN, Nobakht added.
On December 18, 2013, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve the WAVE proposal, put forward by President Hassan Rouhani.
The initiative calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism. The Iranian president had made the proposal in his address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25, 2013.
Also speaking at the World Assembly of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) congress’s closing ceremony was Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf who underlined the importance Islam attaches to justice and confronting injustice.
Elsewhere at the ceremony, a number of Shia activists in different fields were honored.
They included Egyptian journalist Ali Abu al-Khayr, Sri Lankan preacher Sheikh Tijan Seila, Syrian social activist Sayid Ayman Zaytun, and Shimshad Hussein Razavi, head of Shia Scholars Council of Norway.
700 foreign guests from 130 world countries together with a number of Iranian political and cultural figures participated in the four-day assembly.
